Geography

HFJS Geography (Years 3–6)

Geography at our school is designed to develop pupils’ secure locational knowledge, understanding of human and physical geography, and a strong grasp of geographical skills. The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure knowledge builds progressively from Year 3 to Year 6 and prepares pupils well for Key Stage 3.

Curriculum Intent

Our geography curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Develop a secure understanding of the UK, Europe and the wider world
  • Know and use key geographical vocabulary accurately
  • Understand how physical and human processes shape places and environments
  • Can apply map, atlas, globe and digital mapping skills
  • Use fieldwork and enquiry to observe, measure, record and analyse geographical features

Curriculum Overview and Progression

Throughout Key Stage 2, pupils progressively develop:

  •  UK geography, local area studies, physical features and introductory map skills
  •  European geography, rivers, land use and developing compass and grid reference skills
  • Global geography including the Americas, climate zones, biomes and tectonic processes
  • Complex geographical concepts such as sustainability, population, migration and global interdependence, with increasing independence in enquiry

Skills and Knowledge Development

Throughout Key Stage 2, pupils progressively develop:

  • Locational and place knowledge
  • Fieldwork and enquiry skills
  • Map skills including four- and six-figure grid references
  • The ability to analyse patterns, make comparisons and draw conclusions

Enrichment and Application

Geography learning is strengthened through local fieldwork, cross-curricular links and the use of a range of high-quality resources. Pupils are encouraged to think critically about the world and their role within it.

Our geography curriculum ensures pupils leave Year 6 with the knowledge, skills and understanding required to succeed in the next stage of their education.
